The impact of Evolve & Flourish's Compassionate Communities project on the local communities of Birmingham

In May 2024 Evolve & Flourish Ltd was commissioned to work with five Neighbourhood Network Schemes (NNS) in Birmingham, to help build the foundations of compassionate communities within their constituencies. This project lasted 10 months and was evaluated by both Evolve & Flourish and BVSC (Birmingham Voluntary Service Council) research team.

This summary report shares the key challenges that we faced in engaging local assets with conversations about end of life planning and grief, our learnings of what went well, and key themes that emerged relating to the impact of the project on individuals and the wider community.

The ripple effect of the project is only just beginning to be seen, with people starting to connect and form informal circles of support. With time and continued investment in this work, this foundation has the potential to create a community that has the skills, confidence and capacity to support those around them coping with loss or approaching end of life, reducing their reliance upon service providers.
